Tracks on Tracks!
Remember last fall when we went to Vancouver and did a Green Couch Sessions video under a gazebo in English Bay? (no? view it HERE) WELL... As it turns out, the amazing people at Green Couch Sessions and the rad people at CBC Radio 3 and the legendary people at Via Rail have all gotten together and planned this unreal train trip from Vancouver to Toronto, where a hand full of bands get to rock their way East playing shows in various cities eventually getting to NXNE Music Festival in Toronto. Green Couch will film the whole ordeal which PROMISES to breed good times.
Here is where it gets even better. Green Couch Sessions have already hand picked most of the bands to go. BUT there is room for THREE MORE BANDS and YOU GET TO PICK THEM.
Here is the deal....We really really really want to go on this train. We've already been put on the long list to go. Now there are a bunch of voting rounds that will eventually get us on that train if we get enough votes per round.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE US ON THIS TRAIN THEN PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO TO THE FOLLOWING LINK AND CLICK ON OUR NAME. http://cbc.polldaddy.com/s/new-survey-3?pop=10
We will love you forever and promise to rock that train harder than FESTIVAL EXPRESS.

Gig Announcement: BC Tour with QUOIA !
So over the last year we've been very busy playing shows. Lot's and lot's and lot's of shows. From Seattle to Ottawa we've covered some ground and besides losing the alternator, rear differential, and transmission on Super Dave, it's been a blast.
Every once in a while we will play a show somewhere and a member from the audience will tell us afterwards that we need to pair up with the very amazing band QUOIA from Victoria for some shows. After hearing this a few times, we decided to see if such an event could possibly transpire. And presto banjo, as it turns out, the guys in Quoia are rad and are down to share the stage with us for a two week tour of BC. BOOM! Like a perfect folk rock storm, the Island meets the Koots, West meets East, stoke meets stoke, this tour is going to be off the hook and we can't wait. Check out Quioa here. and the show dates below:
17 May 2012 Upstairs Cabaret, Victoria, BC, CANADA
18 May 2012 The Waverly, Cumberland, BC, CANADA
20 May 2012 Beaver Point Hall, Salt Spring Island, BC, CANADA
30 May 2012 The Northern, Fernie, BC, CANADA
31 May 2012 The Canmore Hotel, Canmore, AB, CANADA
1 June 2012 The Rockwater Bar and Grill, Golden, BC, CANADA
2 June 2012 The Royal on Baker, Nelson, BC, CANADA
See you soon glorious glorious Ocean!

Thanks Kootenays!!
The Kootenay Music Awards happened this past week in Nelson, BC and thanks to all of our AWESOME fans we won Artist of the Year and Best Folk/Country band of the Year. Unfortunately we were in Ontario at Canadian Music Week during the awards so we couldn't be there, but we sent an acceptance speech to Nelson ahead of time. I think it's totally going to go viral.
New Album begins.....
Hey Friends! Well we are back in Fernie after a great time at Canadian Music Week. Our showcase was great and after taking in some good music including a BC showcase and a surprise show by Dan Mangan, we set off for a week long Southern Ontario mini tour. We were too cheap to rent a van after landing in the 25 degree heat of Southern Ontario so we borrowed my mom's Subaru (my folks live in Richmond Hill), and like sweaty sardines crammed in a can, we treked around the lower half of the province playing our hearts out in some great venues including the legendary Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield, QC.
But now that we're back in wintery Fernie, BC, I'm not strappin'on the board and hitting the hills that I've been craving the last two weeks...no, I'm on the couch with my banjo, writing the last of the future foot stomper's that will appear on the NEW SHRED KELLY ALBUM. That's right, just as we settle back into mountain life, in three weeks we are flying back to Toronto to begin recording our 2nd album at Green Door Studios. We are more than stoked to work with Producer John Critchley who has worked with some of our hero's. So stay tuned for many more blog updates of the album making process.

The Casbah in Hamilton
So not having very high expectations for a Tuesday night show (we've had our fair share of really dead Tuesday night shows, and as a result, Tuesday has not proven itself to be the best gigging night of the week.) But boy, you can imagine our surprise when we stumbled into the Casbah in Hamilton last night.
There were two local bands playing. 1st was Golden Horseshoe Revival, a bluegrass group from Hamilton who just killed it. They had the most beautiful harmonies I've ever heard, and I'm a sucker for a group all sharing one mic. It creates such a great stage dynamic!
Also from Hamilton was a fantastic group called The Great Lake Survival. They had such great stage energy and musicianship, and it was a pleasure to get to play with them.
Then to our immense surprise was a band from Austin Texas, who are killing it right now by the way. They are called Bright Light Social Hour, and I'll try to find a video to show you a little bit of how they knocked our socks off. I've never had my jaw drop so hard in a live performance EVER. They are all ridiculously good at what they do. The keyboard player was a keyboard ninja. I don't even know what he was doing! In all laws of music the way he mashed that keyboard should've sounded like garbage, but it sounded like a little box of honey covered magic. I remain mystified.
I hope this video in some way shows what we experienced last night.

Canadian Music Week in Toronto
After a few days to recover from CMW, we are able to reflect on the awesomeness that occurred.
In our showcase alone there were some pretty amazing bands, and that was happening in every venue around Toronto. Amazing experience.
Huge shout out to Paula and Karol who we had the opportunity to meet at our CMW showcase. This group from Poland is not only uber talented, but they are also the most fantastic people. They are tempting me to get a 1 way ticket to Poland.
Check them out!
Thank you so much CMW, Toronto, and all the amazing bands and artists we saw and met there.

Wapiti Video
Here is a video made by Rory Hinds of the spectacular Wapiti experience last summer. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am and they are only $30, which honestly is unheard of. Last year had an incredible line up of emerging Canadian artists, and this year we will expect nothing short of amazing.
We were so happy to have been a part of this, and share the stage with so many amazing artists. Thanks again Wapiti, and thanks to Rory Hinds for the amazing video.

Shred Kelly to play 2012 Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival!
Well it looks like our summer is starting to take shape and our first show announcement is a big one! Shred Kelly is going to be playing the 20th Annual Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival along with legendary players like Cuff the Duke, Five Alarm Funk, and Robert Randolf and The Family Band......just glorious! More headlining acts will be announced over the winter and knowing Roots and Blues, the line-up will get more and more great in the coming weeks.
For those who don't know, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival is a legendary music festival in BC. Back in 2009, a bunch of us made the pilgrimage from Fernie to Salmon Arm to attend the festival (Sage actually biked there!) It was a weekend of Elliott Brood, Sam Roberts, Bedouin Soundclash, Chad Vangaalen, and many more. We danced to "Valley Town" barefoot in the mud and it was one of the best times I've ever had.
And what a treat to know that one of the most entertaining bands, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, are playing the festival as well. Here's a taste of the awesomeness that will befall on Salmon Arn this summer.

Great live show reviews!
We're pretty stoked about a few reviews we've been getting lately about our live show. While in Windsor, Ontario in November, we played a place called The Phog Lounge. The Phog Lounge is a great place to go catch live music and the staff there are stellar. A bunch of amazing people from Detroit were at our show and as it turns out, they come to the Phog Lounge all the time to discover and support Canadian indy bands by blogging about them on their website. HOW AWESOME IS THAT! Spreading the Canadian music gospel in Michigan. And they liked us! They liked us so much that they named us one of their top live shows of 2011 amongst the likes of The Handsome Furs, The Rural Alberta Advantage, and Hey Rosetta! We couldn't be happier. Thank you NORTH TO DETROIT, SOUTH TO WINDSOR.
See blog and list here http://www.n2ds2w.com/2012/01/our-top-shows-of-2011.html
And here is a review from (HEART) ON OUR SLEAVES of our first show back in Golden, BC since opening for Elliott Brood:
"I did a show review a few months back for these guys, and nothing has changed. From Fernie, BC, Shred Kelly’s live performances have become something of legend. I can honestly say that mosh pitting at a folk show is quite uncommon, so I was stunned as I charged head first like an asshole into the ring :D. All kidding aside, it is impossible for anyone to walk into a venue and not instantly become taken away with the atmosphere the band has created. Combining the heartfelt sincerity of Mumford & Sons, and the rambunktiousness of Flogging Molly, Shred Kelly’s brand of self-appointed ’Stoke Folk’ is definitely not something to miss."

"I Hate Work" on Tourism Fernie Video!
STOKED! I love this new video from Tourism Fernie that has our song "I Hate Work" as the soundtrack.
Shred Kelly Green Couch Sessions video is here!
It was a rainy autumn day when we descended on the great city of Vancouver. We had just driven 10 hours over many mountain passes coming from Golden, BC after performing as the opening act for the great Elliott Brood the night before. We had a few days in the city before our show at the Railway Club and during this time we had two things on our agenda. The first was to eat sushi...because the city of Vancouver has a lot of good sushi. The second was to meet with the wonderful people at Green Couch Sessions. This is a wonderful group of people who make videos of bands performing somewhere in the city. What makes their videos unique is that they capture the bands in a raw, stripped down acoustic performance in various locations around Vancouver that you would not necessarily see a band performing.
Not being from the city and with a torrential downpour of rain on our hands, we had no idea of what location we should choose for the backdrop of our video, so we went to a community center and asked someone behind a desk. They told us that there was a really cool old manor that serves as a community retirement home just up the street. So we met the Green Couch people on the deck of this cool old manor, but after two takes of Tornado Alley, the owners told us to leave because the foot-stomping was disturbing the tenants. Sorry tenants!
Not satisfied with the first takes and just getting comfortable with the camera, we decided to find another location and sure enough, a park gazebo in English Bay provided an amazing shelter and backdrop. There were no stairs up to the gazebo because it was closed for the winter so we had to hoist the couch and ourselves up over a crazy high banister. There was evidence of people inhabiting the gazebo, but lucky for us they weren't home. We shot two takes, I broke a banjo string, and after two takes the police came and shut us down. We got the goods though and we couldn't be happier.
Thank you Green Couch Sessions for the amazing day. (www.greencouchsessions.ca)

Happy New Year!!!
Happy New Year Shreddies!
I would have updated this yesterday, but I was piecing together the events of New Years Eve in a world of pain, running over my resolutions while pounding back a huge plateful of fries. Was there really a band of women dressed as men and a man wearing a tutu? Luckily, I think so. (Thanks to Blackberry Wood and Oxygen Orkestar) Thank you to Paul and the staff of the Royal on Baker in Nelson for throwing one rad New Years Eve Party.
While overindulging in fried food I had the unique opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of 2011. SO so many highs. Too many to list. So instead we'll condense that section by saying - playing many amazing shows and festivals, meeting many incredible musicians, and getting to spend time with some of the most generous people in the world who open their doors to us and endlessly support us on our musical journey. We feel so lucky to be living our dream.
For the amount of time on the road, we really have had only a few moments of pain and suffering - Tim drank some bad water, and had a beaver fever baby, we hit a antlered animal outside Saskatoon, jack-knifed the trailer, ran out of gas a few times, had a few tantrums, but all in all it was a good year.
Thank you friends, family and fans for another great year. See you in 2012!
Love, Shred Kelly.
Happy New Years at The Tie Dye Ball
